WHAT'S NEW FOR 2019?

"INTERNATIONAL TRAVEL FOR THE GLOBAL CITIZEN"

This year Home At First has adopted this short standard as the guiding principal of our business: "International Travel for the Global Citizen". While we do not intend its use to be especially evangelical or political, we do wish to tell you a little about the concept.

Home At First has provided international travel for more than thirty years. While relaxing, fun, educational, invigorating, and often inspiring, international travel can also be challenging. Few of us like long airplane rides. No one likes jet lag. Culture shocks — like adjusting to driving on the left side of the road — are rarely seamlessly comfortable. We admit that foreign foods sometimes become memorable for the wrong reasons. We confess that bad weather, long lines, and unintelligible language can test one’s patience. Even so, we still get excited the moment we start to pack our bags for our next departure. Despite the modern security complications of Customs & Immigration and the TSA, we agree with George Bailey (Jimmy Stewart) in Frank Capra’s classic movie It’s A Wonderful Life:

"You know what the three most exciting
sounds in the world are?

Anchor chains, plane motors & train whistles."

International Travel teaches relentlessly:

• We learned to love walking in the Alps, as expected. Unexpectedly, in
Switzerland we also learned that quality public transportation can become everyone’s first choice ground travel option.

• Bermuda taught us that while race may signal cultural differences, racial differences need not divide the culture.

• Scandinavian democracies surprise visitors with an inclusiveness and fairness that engender a sense of community without the sacrifice of individual freedom or quality of life.

• Travel in New Zealand and Iceland teaches that green energy – hydro, wind, solar, & geothermal – can successfully reduce the use of fossil fuels without reducing employment or increasing costs.

• Whenever we are in Italy or France we are reminded that food tastes better when sourced locally, prepared creatively, served traditionally, and savored slowly with family and friends.

• Britain & Ireland – so familiar through our common language and history – surprise us with subtle differences. Immersed in their left-handed society, visitors must learn anew which way to look, to drive, even to pass on the sidewalk. We re-learn that newspapers and books (and reading!) still flourish, as do boxing, horse racing, fox hunting, betting parlors, and millinery & umbrella shops. Somehow all of these coexist harmoniously with avant-garde fashions, hi-tech gadgets, and trend-setting art, architecture, music, dance, and theater. And shared among them all is a never-lost art of lively conversation.

Who is a Global Citizen? Someone unafraid of international travel; someone who welcomes the newness of international travel and its unrelenting teaching. The Global Citizen brings back newly-learned lessons in alternative realities and often applies them to their own realities at home. We all have the option to choose to become citizens of Planet Earth. We know some will choose not to.

We here at Home At First have chosen to become Global Citizens. So in the spirit

of our new guiding principle, we promise to help make international travel an affordable

place to learn, to enable others to become Global Citizens, too.
