THE ACCOMMODATION: Bayview Cottage is set on a hillside cul-de-sac overlooking Bantry Bay just south of Glengarriff village in southwest Ireland. The two-story cottage is new construction in a development of 3 or 4 like houses. Its ground floor includes one double bedroom (twin beds), one full bathroom with tub/shower, a spacious kitchen (with large fridge, range/oven, microwave), a utility room (with washer and dryer) with plenty of storage, and a large living room/dining room with fireplace and color TV. Opening off the dining room via sliding doors is a furnished backyard terrace, with landscaped garden, featuring a fine view of the Glengarriff Harbour arm

of Bantry Bay.

The upper floor of the cottage includes one double bedroom (double bed) with en suite bathroom (shower — no tub), a children’s double bedroom with bunk beds, and a single bedroom. A third full bath (with shower — no tub) is located in the upstairs hall. There is private driveway parking as well as safe parking on the cul-de-sac in front of the cottage.

THE SETTING: Two minutes drive from the cottage, Glengarriff is a charming village with a basic grocery, a handful of pubs, a good tourist information office, several shops (including some featuring fine Irish woolens), and six restaurants. A ferry service takes passengers to Garinish (or Garnish, or Ilnacullin) Island in Glengarriff Harbour, site of 37 acres of Italianate formal gardens well worth exploring. The harbor area also hides some lovely coves and beaches ideal for strolling, picnics, and, when the Irish summer permits, swimming.

THE HOSTS: The friendly owners/hosts meet you upon arrival and explain the workings of the cottage and the village. They reside in Cork city, 90 minutes to the east, but do have representatives in Glengarriff who are available in emergencies.

In our customers' own words—

"Outstanding accommodations! Genial, friendly hosts. Hosts even traveled 90 minutes to give us an emergency message."

— G. & J. Wacker, Maryland

ACTIVITIES: Glengarriff is an ideal location for touring throughout the peninsulas, parks, and inland areas of western Cork County and southern Kerry County the far southwest of Ireland. Within day-trip reach is all of Cork County and most of Kerry, including the Kerry and Dingle peninsulas.
          Outdoors enthusiasts walkers, cyclists, anglers,
hikers, climbers will find no better surroundings to pursue their sports in all of Ireland. Golfers, too, will enjoy the challenge of the many local courses the closest being but two minutes from Bayview Cottage. Some of Ireland's big name courses (Old Head of Kinsale, Waterville, Killarney) are within reach as well.
Those fond of seafood will enjoy the great bounty of local seafood especially fresh mussels presented in many fine local restaurants in Glengarriff, Bantry (15 minutes south), and Kenmare (30 minutes north).

THE LOCATION: Glengarriff is a triple gateway village. First, it is the backdoor entrance to western County Cork, arguably Ireland’s most remote and rugged region, a land of mountains, headlands, and convoluted coastline. Second, Glengarriff is the gateway to the wildly scenic Beara Peninsula. Here are classic Irish villages, like Allihies, Eyeries, and Ardgroom, colorful stops along the day-long tour known as the Ring of Beara. Here, too is great walking and great cycling, along the Beara Way and the Beara Way Cycle Route. Third, Glengarriff is the gateway to the southern gateway to County Kerry, with

The 30-minute drive over the Caha Mountain moonscape — via rough-hewn tunnels at the summit — to Kenmare in Kerry is itself one of the great drives of Ireland. These grand views convince you that Ireland is not only a soft, green landscape with gentle hills, but, like Scotland, can also be an unforgiving landscape covered with heather and gorse. Ireland here is its furthest distance from Dublin, with few inhabitants, small villages — some of which are still Gaelic speaking — and its most dramatic.
