Drive northwest a
half-day to Northern Europes largest mountain plateau. Stay in HOME AT FIRST's
small, rural hotel on the eastern edge of the
Hardangervidda National Park. (Dinner is included
daily at this remote hotel.) This high,
rugged wilderness laced with waterfalls and wild rivers is home to moose as well as
Scandinavias largest wild reindeer population.
– BY TRAIN:
Rail northwest a half-day to Northern Europe's largest mountain plateau.

Northwest from the

– BY RENTAL CAR:
the Hardangervidda drive (2-3 hours) across a dramatic, high landscape and descend the
steep walls of the Aurland Valley to the spectacular, interior reaches of the Sognefjord
BY TRAIN: Rail west across the scenic Hardangervidda plateau
wilderness to Myrdal, a remote rail junction approximately half-way
between Oslo and Bergen. Change to the world-famous Flåmsbana train for
its steep descent from the mountain plateau to the village of Flåm on
one night at HOME AT FIRST's traditional fjord-side hotel on the
Sognefjord at the foot of towering mountains. Explore the area by
hiking, cycling the old navvies' road parallel to the
A SHORT CRUISE ON THE EXTRAORDINARY
At Flåm, transportation cnter on the edge of
the fjord, buy tickets for the 2-hour fjord cruise among the cliff-faced mountains
of the Nærøyfjord, a
Onward to Bergen from the Sognefjord.
After Flåm, there are several routes onward to Norway's
west coast at the historic Hanseatic city of Bergen:
RENTAL CAR: From
Flåm drive (4 hours) via tunnels and main roads direct to Bergen. Or, to
spend more time in the fjords, drive 2-3 hours to a lovely, traditional
village on the north shore of the Sognefjord. Enjoy a night here at
classic rural Norway hotel. From here, drive direct to Bergen (5 hours)
or spend another day in the fjords by crossing north through spectacular
mountains to the Nordfjord. Spend a memorable night enjoying the
traditional hospitality and famous restaurant alley to in a town by the
Nordfjord. The following day, drive 6-7 hours southwest along the rugged
interior and coast of western Norway to reach Bergen.
– BY TRAIN: From Flåm, return via
the Flåmsbana Railway to Myrdal and catch the through train to Bergen.
Journey time: about 4 hours.
– BY BOAT: From Flåm, take a
fjord passenger boat to Bergen. Journey time is about 6 hours. However,
if you wish more time in fjord country, stop for night at
a lovely village known for its artists and
craftsmen on the north shore of the Sognefjord. Enjoy a night here at
classic rural Norway hotel. The following day, catch the fjord cruiser
to complete the trip to Bergen (4.5 hours).

West from Oslo to the
Hardanger Fjord. Drive west a
full day from Oslo on a dramatic fjord and mountain route along the southern and western edges of the Hardangervidda National Park to the Hardanger Fjord. Along the way, learn
about the Heroes of Telemark and Norwegian resistance during World War II, and visit the
National Park visitors center. Stay at least one night at HOME AT FIRST's small, traditional fjord-side hotel on the Hardanger. Explore this scenic region of fjords, mountains, waterfalls, and
