Best of Norway

The trip across Norway from Oslo to Bergen passes
through some of the most dramatic
scenery imaginable.

All Photos this Page © Home At First

Travel from Norway's cultural and political capital, Oslo, to the historic World Heritage city of Bergen via the rugged wilderness of the Hardanger Plateau, and the scenic spectacle of the mountains & fjords of the Hardanger & Sogne regions.

Travel most flexibly by rental car, or, if driving across mountain passes and through long tunnels doesn't appeal to you, travel by train and only miss one stop.

Activities en route: hiking, white-water rafting, mountain biking, skiing, cruising fjords, visiting museums, major waterfalls, traditional villages, & historic churches.

Begin your adventure at royal OSLO, Norway’s vibrant, modern capital at the head of the Oslo Fjord. Discover the royal palace, Oslo’s great harbor with its Viking Ship, Kon Tiki, and Maritime museums, and the remarkable sculpture of Vigeland’s Park. HOME AT FIRST's friendly Oslo hotel is located away from the bustle of downtown, within walking distance of the Palace and a 10-minute trolley ride from most popular attractions.

From Oslo there are two optional routes west to choose from:
-

OPTION A VIA THE SOGNEFJORD: choose from 3 methods of travel —
– BY RENTAL CAR: with maximum touring and activities flexibility.
– BY TRAIN: on
the scenic Oslo-Bergen Railway, with limited tourig & activities flexibility.
– BY TRAIN & BOAT: train from Oslo to the Sognefjord, then cruise the fjord on to Bergen.

Northwest from Oslo to the Hardangervidda.
– BY RENTAL CAR: Drive northwest a half-day to Northern Europe’s largest mountain plateau. Stay in HOME AT FIRST's small, rural hotel on the eastern edge of the Hardangervidda National Park. (Dinner is included daily at this remote hotel.) This high, rugged wilderness laced with waterfalls and wild rivers is home to moose as well as Scandinavia’s largest wild reindeer population.
– BY TRAIN: Rail northwest a half-day to Northern Europe's largest mountain plateau. Stay in HOME AT FIRST's rustic/modern hotel near the station in Geilo along the northern edge of the Hardangervidda National Park. Enjoy a sumptuous Norwegian dinner and a walk through the town, nestled in a valley between ski resorts.

Adventure Activities — You can arrange for the following extra-cost guided     activities at the Hardangervidda hotels:

RIVER RAFTING! White water rafting on a wild, cold, high river.

WILDERNESS HIKING! Choose from several hikes in the beautiful high country.

MOOSE SAFARI! Spot moose in the wild at night.

Northwest from the Hardangervidda to the Sognefjord.
– BY RENTAL CAR: From the Hardangervidda drive (2-3 hours) across a dramatic, high landscape and descend the steep walls of the Aurland Valley to the spectacular, interior reaches of the Sognefjord at Flåm.
– BY TRAIN: Rail west across the scenic Hardangervidda plateau wilderness to Myrdal, a remote rail junction approximately half-way between Oslo and Bergen. Change to the world-famous Flåmsbana train for its steep descent from the mountain plateau to the village of Flåm on the Sognefjord.

At Flåm, stay one night at HOME AT   FIRST's traditional fjord-side hotel on the Sognefjord at the foot of towering mountains. Explore the area by hiking,  cycling the old navvies' road parallel to the Flåmsbana railway, or by:

A SHORT CRUISE ON THE EXTRAORDINARY NÆRØYFJORD — At Flåm, transportation cnter on the edge of the fjord, buy tickets for the 2-hour fjord cruise among the cliff-faced mountains of the Nærøyfjord, a UNESCO World Heritage Site..

Onward to Bergen from the Sognefjord. After Flåm, there are several routes onward to Norway's west coast at the historic Hanseatic city of Bergen:

– BY RENTAL CAR: From Flåm drive (4 hours) via tunnels and main roads direct to Bergen. Or, to spend more time in the fjords, drive 2-3 hours to a lovely, traditional village on the north shore of the Sognefjord. Enjoy a night here at classic rural Norway hotel. From here, drive direct to Bergen (5 hours) or spend another day in the fjords by crossing north through spectacular mountains to the Nordfjord. Spend a memorable night enjoying the traditional hospitality and famous restaurant alley to in a town by the Nordfjord. The following day, drive 6-7 hours southwest along the rugged interior and coast of western Norway to reach Bergen.

– BY TRAIN: From Flåm, return via the Flåmsbana Railway to Myrdal and catch the through train to Bergen. Journey time: about 4 hours.

– BY BOAT: From Flåm, take a fjord passenger boat to Bergen. Journey time is about 6 hours. However, if you wish more time in fjord country, stop for night at a lovely village known for its artists and craftsmen on the north shore of the Sognefjord. Enjoy a night here at classic rural Norway hotel. The following day, catch the fjord cruiser to complete the trip to Bergen (4.5 hours).

OR choose—
