LOCATION: Dunedin is New Zealand's fourth most populous city, and second largest city on the South Island (after Christchurch). Founded in 1848 by Scottish colonists who thought its weather and coastline reminiscent of their former British homeland, Dunedin has become an international city with a young, diverse population. Its fine harbor has made Dunedin a major port. Its respected university has made Dunedin a respected seat of learning. As the principal city in the southern half of the South Island, Dunedin plays an important role in the burgeoning economy of this part of
New Zealand.

HOSTING: Ewa and Keith, the co-owners/hosts at Dunedin Lodge, are ex-pats from half-a-world away (Poland and the UK) who changed careers, addresses, and outlooks to find new life in New Zealand. They take great interest in the comfort and welfare of their guests and are eager to help visitors get to know and appreciate their adopted favorite corner of the world. Educated for, experienced in, and liberated from demanding high level professional careers in Europe and Britain, Ewa and Keith are as interesting to their guests as their globe-trotting guests are to them. Visitors to Dunedin Lodge should expect excellent, courteous hosting with an ever-present possibility of stimulating conversation.

THE SETTING: Dunedin Lodge is set on a hillside avenue leading to The Octagon, bustling Victorian heart of Dunedin city. The house is set away from the street enough to keep any traffic noise minimal, and its private, off-street parking ensures safety and convenience getting to/from one's car. Cars are not necessary for reaching several fine restaurants, a number of shops, and other services in a 10-minute walking radius. A five-minute drive reaches the entrance to the scenic drive around the Otago Peninsula. Within two minutes drive is an entrance to Dunedin's Southern Motorway one of very few limited-access highways in New Zealand which

provides quick access to Dunedin Airport, the roads

leading southwest to the scenic Catlins and to the wonders

of FIORDLAND, and west across the former (and present) Otago goldfields towards Queenstown.

ACTIVITIES: Dunedin city is known for its Scottish heritage and solid British architecture Dunedin Lodge is a prime example of both its excellent Pacific beaches at Saint Clair and Saint Kilda (short drives from Dunedin Lodge), the dramatically beautiful Otago Peninsula with its important bird sanctuary with penguin and Royal Albatross colonies, and its famed narrow-gauge Taieri Gorge Railway that offers daily trips into the South Island's wild, rugged interior from downtown Dunedin's grand railway station most of the year. The Taieri Gorge Express connects with the scenic Otago Central Rail Trail, offering easy cycling adventures in remote territory and a unique way for travel between Dunedin and Queenstown.
