The Apartments at
St. Katharine's Marina

by the Tower of London and the TOWER BRIDGE

KATHRYN HOWARD APARTMENT

A 2-bedroom, 1½-bathroom, 2-story London maisonette apartment, the Kathryn Howard apartment is a comfortable lodging for four to six persons. The apartment overlooks a leafy, private park from its location on the fifth and sixth floors of a building bordering exclusive ST. KATHARINE'S MARINA by the 1,000-year-old Tower of London. The marina’s sequestered location along the RIVER THAMES provides shopping, dining, and other services in a quiet pedestrian refuge with a yachting atmosphere, while allowing easy access to all of Central London.

St. Katharine's Marina — The East Dock

View from of the East Dock of St. Katharine's Marina with the 18th century Dickens Inn pub visible across the moored boats to the left. Rising above the Dickens Inn roofline is the pinnacle of Europe's tallest skyscraper, The Shard, and, to its left, the spires of the north tower of the Tower Bridge. The other famous neighbor of St. Katharine's Marina, the Tower of London, is unseen but just behind the buildings in the center background.

HISTORY: St. Katharine's and the Tower of London were witness to much of the drama of TUDOR ENGLAND. During the Middle Ages, King Henry VIII and his six wives were royal patrons of the St. Katharine’s hospice that occupied the site of today's St. Katharine's Marina serving as both a hospital and a lodging for travelers and pilgrims. The king and his wives were often in residence at the neighboring TOWER OF LONDON, then a royal palace as well as a fortress. KATHRYN HOWARD was wife #5 (1540–42), who followed (after a 16-day hiatus) the annulment of king’s marriage to ANNE OF CLEVES. Kathryn was 19 years old, and Henry 49. Like her cousin, wife #2 ANNE BOLEYN, Kathryn became all too familiar with the Tower, being executed (for infidelity) and buried not far from Anne Boleyn (who had been  executed for infidelity six years earlier) after less than two years of wedlock. Seventeen months later, Kathryn was replaced by the sixth and last wife of Henry VIII, KATHERINE PARR, who outlived the king by 3½ years. Katherine Parr, like Henry's wife #3, JANE SEYMOUR, died of complications following childbirth after re-marrying, ironically to Jane's brother THOMAS SEYMOUR. Such were the complications of life and death at the Tudor court of Henry VIII, perhaps especially at the fortress/palace of the Tower of London.

LIVING ROOM

WITH PARK VIEW

THE APARTMENT: Entry to the Kathryn Howard apartment is on its upper floor, which has two double bedrooms (both with twin beds) and a full bathroom (with tub-shower). Downstairs is a powder room (toilet & sink), a comfortable living room (with fold-out double couch bed, WiFi, & cable color TV), a well-equipped kitchen/dining area (microwave, coffee maker, and clothes washer-dryer). A hair dryer is provided, as is a table-top pay phone (accepts incoming calls; takes coins for outgoing calls).

BATHROOM WITH TUB/SHOWER

TWIN BEDROOM WITH PARK VIEW

A furnished, covered balcony opens off the kitchen and overlooks a peaceful, tree-lined square, available for the private use of building residents. Although the apartment does not offer a view of the marina, the quiet and normally weather-protected balcony is a useful, tranquil, comfortable place above the square in its canopy of trees.

EAT-IN KITCHEN &

BALCONY WITH PARK VIEW

The two-story apartment is spacious, well equipped, comfortable, and well-kept. Its optimal occupancy is four persons, but it can accept a family of five or six using the fold-out sofa bed in the living room.

KITCHEN WITH WASHER/DRYER

While the entrance and hallways of the apartment building are undecorated and lack a concierge or doorman, the complex is safe (with a coded entry system), well-managed, and clean. The building has stainless steel lifts (elevators) that are spotless and well-maintained.

Guests are met upon arrival by the friendly apartment manager who lives elsewhere in the complex. He opens the apartment, explains its workings and is available throughout your stay to answer any questions you might have.

THE KATHRYN HOWARD APARTMENT

overlooks a lovely, leafy, peaceful, private garden square (park) which is available for use of the apartment building residents. Unseen from the apartment on the opposite side of the building is the upscale, pedestrians- only East Dock of St. Katharine's Marina. The apartment's location provides a serene refuge from the hustle of the city while enabling quick and easy access to the Tower of London, the Tower Bridge, and all of Central London.

THE SETTING: ST. KATHARINE'S MARINA is located on the north bank of the RIVER THAMES about a five-to-eight-minute walk from the famous TOWER OF LONDON and the TOWER BRIDGE. The apartment is a seven-to-ten-minute, traffic-free walk from the TOWER HILL UNDERGROUND STATION (subway trains) and TOWER GATEWAY (for the Dockland Light Railway), and a three-minute walk to a bus stop for London’s well-known red double-decker buses.

The Marina is a traffic-restricted pedestrian zone, which does not permit cars other than for a few privileged residents who are provided with underground parking. Strolling to the period 18th century DICKENS INN pub/restaurant or to any of several of other marina restaurants and cafés is a pleasure. The marina offers exclusive shopping at several small boutiques. There is also a STARBUCKS coffee shop in the center of the marina and a Tesco Express convenience store at the southwestern entrance to the marina across from the Tower

Bridge steps and the underpass to the Tower of London.

After a day of sightseeing in the hustle and bustle of downtown London, you will find the marina’s quiet atmosphere a real joy. On the outside edge of the Marina is a state-of-the-art WAITROSE SUPERMARKET, ideal for guests wishing to make good use of the apartment’s fully equipped kitchen. In the small shopping center by the supermarket there is also a laundry/dry cleaner, a bookstore, and a video shop.

St. Katharine's Marina—The East Dock

St. Katharine's Marina by the River Thames

St. Katharine's Marina on River Thames is just downriver from the landmark Tower Bridge and the monumental Tower of London. Inside the marina — a pedestrians-and-boats-only refuge from the frantic traffic of London — scarcely any loud sound other than the rare boat whistle interrupts the hush. Friday's popular, open-air Good Food Market is more a treat for the nose than an assault on the ears. Outside the marina life's pace quickly quickens to London's customary alternating hurry-and-wait lurch, accompanied by the cacophony of traffic and the pressure of throngs. St. Katharine's is something of an oasis, but London is no desert. The marina is at most 45 minutes from the remotest corner of Central London. Served by six modes of public transportation — tube, bus, boat, train, light rail, and taxi — St. Katharine's makes a fine base for your exploration of London and beyond. Happily, the marina is just as easily reached when the end of your day's outing comes. And, with several excellent restaurant choices and two markets close to your apartment home, the end of the day comes with the promise that the evening meal will be tasty and the setting one of tranquil beauty. Bon appétit. Bonne journée.

THE TOWER OF LONDON — LONDON'S #1 VISITOR
ATTRACTION — IS AN 8-MINUTE TRAFFIC-FREE
WALK FROM THE KATHRYN HOWARD APARTMENT.

LOCATION: St. Katharine’s Marina is just five minutes, traffic-free walking from London’s number one attraction, THE TOWER OF LONDON. The 1,000-year-old fortress occupies the southeast corner of the original Roman city of London. This 2,000-year-old city is today’s vibrant square mile of banking and international commerce, a mixture of post-modern skyscrapers and great history. THE CITY (as it is known) offers museums, restaurants, and pubs of all sizes and styles (and for all budgets). It also has historic

churches, open and covered

markets, and some of Europe’s great architecture, including the TOWER BRIDGE, the SWISS RE BUILDING, and ST. PAUL'S CATHEDRAL.
Tracing both sides of the River Thames are pedestrians-only "pathways". Within traffic-free walking distance of St. Katharine’s Marina are such attractions as the
HMS BELFAST naval warship museum, SHAKESPEARE'S NEW GLOBE THEATRE, the

the LONDON EYE super Ferris wheel,

exciting TATE MODERN art museum, and the popular BOROUGH MARKET. Great restaurants and pubs line the pathways on both shores, including several historic pubs still lining the river in suddenly-upscale COCKNEY EAST LONDON.

Beyond walking distance but easily reached by Underground, bus, river boat, and light rail in 30 minutes or less are all the famous attractions of London, e.g.:
GREENWICH (22min), WESTMINSTER & PARLIAMENT (11min), SOUTH BANK THEATRES (23min), COVENT GARDEN THEATRES (30min, PICCADILLY CIRCUS (22min), REGENT'S PARK (25min), THE BRITISH MUSEUM (30min), BUCKINGHAM PALACE (25min), and
