ICELAND ISLAND OF FIRE & ICE
Iceland surprises you with a great variety of landscapes, including geothermal regions that
suggest hell on earth, and volcanic wastes that so resemble moonscapes that the Apollo
astronauts practiced in Iceland in the late 1960s for the missions to the moon.

WHERE WE GO IN ICELAND LOCATIONS & LODGINGS

ICELANDIC GEOGRAPHY:
Route 1, the Ring Road
, circumnavigates Iceland in 828 miles. The Ring Road passes through a wide variety of Icelandic geography coming close to some of the country's most impressive waterfalls, several national parks, volcanic regions, glaciers and wild, glacier-fed rivers, while often hugging the island country's scenic, rugged coastline. Some of Iceland's main tourist sites and adventures are found along or near the Ring Road. Along the way, Route 1 connects many of the principal cities, towns, and villages of Iceland. Despite its status as Iceland's main national highway, Route

1 is rarely more than 2 lanes wide, a

winding asphalt roadway that still has

a few (under 20) unpaved miles in its most remote corners.

For many visitors to Iceland, traveling the length of Route 1 means seeing the most and the best of the country, without getting too far away from civilization, and without encountering heavy traffic. At an average speed of 40mph, the Ring Road requires almost 21 hours to complete, a minimum of three long driving days.
SEE MAP.

7-day Visitors to Iceland will have sufficient time to travel the Ring Road with nights in Reykjavik before and after the drive and at strategic locations along Route 1.

The Blue Lagoon geothermal spa near
Reykjavik's international airport at Keflavik
is easily visited by all visitors to Reykjavik.

10-day Visitors to Iceland

can make a more leisurely trip around Route 1, and may add time at each stop to more thoroughly explore each region and for activities.

3-day STOPOVER Visitors have insufficient

time to drive the Ring Road around the island. However, a 3-day stay in Reykjavik permits time to see a broad sampling of some of Iceland's most popular activities and most spectacular scenery.

Reykjavik is Iceland's cultural center, offering several fine museums, opportunities to experience its noted nightlife and highly-rated restaurants, and take in some of its best-known activities, including pampering at the Blue Lagoon thermal spa, and whale watching on the open sea.
All visitors to Reykjavik staying 3 or more days can tour the Golden Circle route, a round-trip of about 200 miles starting and ending in Reykjavik. Possible as a self-drive excursion or via guided bus tour, the Golden Circle takes in stunning scenery and several geologic marvels: waterfalls, geysers, and the visible rift of continental drift in Thingvellir National Park northeast of Reykjavik.
SEE MAP.

In our customers' own words —

"Lovely trip! Iceland was just what we hoped for and the little hotel location was perfect. After Iceland, we loved going back to London, too as always."

LODGINGS IN ICELAND: HOME AT FIRST offers lodgings (inns, hotels, and vacation apartments) in Reykjavik and at strategic points along the Ring Road (Route 1) around Iceland. Wherever located, our accommodations are near stores and restaurants, and activities.

Our Iceland inns and hotels provide substantial breakfasts daily, included in the price. And, as with cottages and apartments at any HOME AT FIRST destination, all our Iceland lodgings have, as a minimum, independent quarters for sleeping and lounging, private bathrooms, and, in the vacation apartments, well-equipped kitchens or kitchenettes without ovens.

The vacation apartments normally have their own laundry machines. Lodgings without clothes washers and dryers have laundry arrangements available through their landlords/hosts. Importantly, all lodgings come with the welcoming, enthusiastic attentions of landlord/hosts, who are committed to making your stay in their accommodation delightful and problem-free.
