Chocolate Box Village Reached by Cable Car

mÜrren conjures images of switzerland's alpine past. MÜRREN Is magical, but it's not magic. ITS REMOTE, ISOLATED LOCATION KEEPS THE ALPINE VILLAGE LARGELY PRISTINE WHILE NEIGHBORING JUNGFRAU REGION RESORT TOWNS LIKE GRINDELWALD AND INTERLAKEN SUCCUMB TO CONSTANT COMMERCIAL PRESSURES TO EXPAND. SET ON A HIGH SHELF A MILE  ABOVE SEA LEVEL AND an ALMOST HEART-IN-THE-THROAT VERTICAL HALF-MILE ABOVE THE NEXT NEAREST TOWN, NO ROADS CONNECT MÜRREN WITH THE REST OF SWITZERLAND. TWO AERIAL CABLE cars — one with two sections — lead from the lauterbrunnen valley floor up to the shelf occupied by mÜrren and several alpine farms. this high farmland brought mÜrren's original residents: wandering walsers from two valleys away.

farming and cheesemaking are still important in the alpine meadowlands of the schilthorn mountain surrounding mÜrren — the prized local mountain cheese is served in traditional swiss alpine dishes in all of mÜrren's restaurants. for the last century these same sloped meadows have become another important cash crop for mÜrren: outdoor sports — skiing in winter and hiking & biking in summer.

MÜRREN HAS BECOME A VILLAGE OF 450 RESIDENTS WITH CAPACITY FOR FIVE TIMES THAT NUMBER OF VISITORS IN ITS SEVERAL HOTELS AND CHALET APARTMENTS. SOME DAYS BRING MANY MORE VISITORS

despite the volumes of day-trippers that can pass through mÜrren during fine weather, the car-free village maintains its alpine character and rural swiss pace of life. during the  day mÜrren is a calm place full of strolling couples, cafés full of diners lingering over lunch, getting sleepy in the intense alpine sun. at night, the restaurants are busy, but not overwhelmed: service is friendly, and not hurried. the amazing alpine peaks seeming within arms' reach during crystalline days, become ghostly outlines lighted by the moon and the milky way during clear nights. there is outstanding natural beauty at mÜrren. and there is peace, too.

Balcony view from the Chalet Silberhorn apartment in Mürren, Switzerland. The view looks east into the Big Three of the Bernese Alps in the Jungfrau Region: Eiger, Mönch, & Jungfrau. In this photo, clouds cloak Eiger and Mönch, while the region's highest mountain, Jungfrau, remains unshrouded in the center of the frame. The view from Mürren is fascinating by all types of weather. With crystal-clear skies the mountains can look within arm's reach of the village. When clouds mask the Alps, the scene changes by the minute with peaks emerging and disappearing in a theater of dramatic surprise. Rain, snow, and night each present new versions of the Alps. The imposing rock wall of the Schwarzmönch opposite Mürren becomes streaked with waterfalls during and after rain. Snow blankets everything in new color and texture. At night, slight outlines of the mountains silhouette against the dark sky, illuminated by the moon or the Milky Way. All Home At First Mürren apartments have balconies or terraced patios with alpine views. The apartments make comfortable vacation homes in the Alps, and their balcony views are unforgettable.

NOTE: Photos on this page are taken from several Home At First apartments in Mürren.

vacation apartments in several locations in the village of Mürren. Most apartments are decorated and comfortably furnished in traditional Swiss alpine style. A few have modern furnishings. All apartments are clean, well cared for, and well-equipped. All are within reasonable walking distance to the stores, services, numerous restaurants, and to Mürren's two transportation stations. Although Mürren is built on the east slope of the Schilthorn mountain, few of our chalet apartments are affected by the hillside. Of those hillside chalet apartments, the longest climb up from Mürren's main street is less than 5 minutes.
Each apartment has secure entry, and Mürren is a safe, pros-perous, residential community. Importantly, all
HOME AT FIRST Mürren apartments come with experienced, caring, English-speaking hosting on-site or very close by.

Classic chalet of Switzerland's Bernese Alps region. Its wooden exterior — originally a shade of blonde — has not been painted, but has been allowed to darken in the sun. Bright red geraniums line the balconies, brightening the dark facade. Chalet Eiger I has comfortable 2- bedroom and 4-bedroom vacation apartments on the second and third floors of this traditional Mürren chalet. The English-speaking hostess lives in the chalet next door with her husband.
Note the one-car train passing the front of the chalet on its way to Mürren BLM station on the north edge of town. This isolated rail line — one of Europe's highest — connects Mürren with the aerial cable car from Grütschalp to Lauterbrunnen, one of two ways of reaching the town from the deep valley below Mürren.

TRAFFIC & TRANSPORTATION IN MÜRREN: Except for a few electric delivery vehicles and the rare farm tractor, Mürren does not have automobile traffic, and none of our apartments are along the busy main street pedestrian zone of shops and restaurants. Apartments at the north end of Mürren are 1-to-3-minutes walk of the town's train station. Apartments at the south end of Mürren are 1-to-5-minutes walk of the aerial cableway down to Stechelberg in the Lauterbrunnen valley and up to the top of the Schilthorn.

CARE AND CLEANLINESS. The apartments have been thoroughly cleaned prior to your arrival, but are not maid-serviced during your stay. Apartments are non-smoking and do not permit pets. Basic starter kitchen and bathroom supplies are provided.

ONE OF TWO BATHROOMS
AT CHALET
JUNGFRAU

The master bathroom of Chalet Jungfrau's third-floor, 2-bath, 3-bedroom (6-person capacity) apartment features a double wash basin and bathtub with shower. Although our highest apartment in Mürren, Chalet Jungfrau is less than five minutes walk from the Schilthorn aerial cablecar, two fine restaurants, and the town's grocery store. The walk up from Mürren's main street to the chalet apartment carrying groceries or after a big restaurant meal can be a testing five minutes. But, for those fit enough to climb the hill plus the steps up to the apartment entry, the reward earned is one of the great alpine balcony views we know of: THE PANORAMA FROM THE JUNGFRAU CHALET APT.

WELL-EQUIPPED: HOME AT FIRST's Mürren apartments have, as a minimum, at least one bedroom, 1 bathroom with a shower, living/dining room, and well-equipped kitchens. Bed, bath, and kitchen linens and towels are provided. Flat-screen TV and WiFi are included, although we submit that most guests spend little time viewing TV or laptop/tablet screens, opting instead to gape at the amazing alpine views from their apartments' windows, balconies, or patio-terraces.

DOUBLE BEDROOM WITH BALCONY
IN A 2-BEDROOM, SECOND FLOOR
APARTMENT AT CHALET EIGER I

This double bedroom with a view is from one of two 2-bedroom (4-person capacity), 1-bathroom apartments on the second floor of Chalet Eiger I. This particular bedroom opens onto a balcony festooned with red geraniums which guests may water. Note that the apartments are not air conditioned — few vacation apartments in Switzerland have air conditioning. Mürren's mile-high altitude deep in the Bernese Alps means it rarely sees temperatures above 75°F even in July and August, when fresh snow can fall on the surrounding high mountain peaks that reach over 13,000'. All Home At First Mürren lodgings have central or in-room heating which may be needed any month of the year.

HOSTING: Importantly, all our Mürren lodgings come with the welcoming, enthusiastic attention of your host &/or hostess, who is/are committed to making your stay in their accommodation delightful and problem-free. Your English-speaking host(-ess) meets you upon your arrival at the BLM rail station on the north end of Mürren or at the Schilthorn cablecar station at the south end of town or at the apartment itself, and introduces you to your apartment and its operation. (Remember, Mürren is car-free. We strongly recommend you do not bring a lot of luggage, as it must be hand-carried or pulled in a small cart from the station to your lodging.) Your host(-ess) is available throughout your stay for any questions, problems, or emergencies, and to advise you when you wish to organize activities.

Annemarie — English-speaking owner/hostess  of Mürren's
Chalet Jungfrau —  enjoys getting to know her guests.

MÖNCH VIEW APARTMENT

The Mönch View apartment is located on the third floor of a chalet-style apartment building. The two-bedroom, two-bathroom (4-person capacity) apartment is decorated in a comfortable modern style with some traditional Swiss elements. While the apartment building has its own indoor pool and elevator for use of the guests, the apartment has its own private balcony which provides a grand alpine view and, if needed, cool air on warm evenings in the Bernese Alps. The apartment building is just a minute's walk from Mürren's BLM rail station. At least four restaurants are within 5-minutes walk of this apartment.

THE BIG THREE MOUNTAINS OF SWITZERLAND'S JUNGFRAU
REGION AS SEEN FROM A BALCONY AT CHALET EIGER I.

Home At First Mürren apartments are located in or on the edge of town, within easy walking distance of stores & restaurants. Mürren is located high on a shelf above the Lauterbrunnen valley. Its dramatic perch provides Mürren with spectacular views of the Bernese Alps. In winter Mürren is a skiers' village. In the summer and into the fall Mürren becomes a walker's paradise, although many visitors come strictly to experience its famed alpine panorama.

MÜRREN APARTMENT LOCATIONS & TRANSPORTATION

          Although all HOME AT

LOCATE MÜRREN ON THIS REGIONAL OVERVIEW

FIRST Mürren vacation lodgings are located within the town limits, a few are just on the quiet edges of the village. All are convenient — walks of 8 minutes or less — to Mürren's center where most shops, services, and many restaurants are concentrated.

Despite Mürren's small size and mountainous location, it is well-served by public transportation. Trains from the BLM station at the north end of town carry passengers to the aerial cablecar at Grütschalp, which then descends to the valley floor at Lauterbrunnen. On Mürren's southern end, the Schilthorn aerial cablecar takes passengers to Stechelberg Station on the valley floor. From here, postal buses carry passengers back and forth to Lauterbrunnen.
In Lauterbrunnen trains carry passengers up to the alpine resort of Wengen and on to Kleine Scheidegg and to Europe's highest railway station, at the Jungfrau. Frequent trains connect Lauterbrunnen with Interlaken (a journey of 1-hour from Mürren) and — via rail, bus, and lake boat services — with destinations away from the Jungfrau Region and throughout Switzerland, even into neighboring countries. Passenger boats operate from Interlaken (the town between two lakes) on Lake Brienz and Lake Thun.

ENTERING MÜRREN ON THE SHELF HIGH ABOVe THE LAUTERBRUNNEN VALLEY, a single-car BLM (Lauterbrunnen-Mürren Railway) train pulls a trailer loaded with freight. Except for the rare helicopter delivery, all visitors and goods come to Mürren via the BLM and the aerial cableways from Lauterbrunnen to Grütschalp and from Stechelberg.

THE SCHILTHORN CABLEWAY extends from Stechelberg in the Lauterbrunnen valley to the top of the Schilthorn mountain, gaining nearly 6,900' (2,103m) of altitude. The total trip is done in 4 sections, each with a large cablecar. The two lower sections connect the valley floor with the southern end of Mürren. Journey time between Mürren and Stechelberg station is ten minutes.

shelf is a vertical half-mile above the nearest town with regular road and rail connections to the rest of Switzerland. This extraordinarily beautiful alpine setting prevents Mürren from being a convenient base from which to explore far and wide throughout Switzerland. But Mürren's central position in the Jungfrau Region of the Bernese Alps makes it a great alpine destination in itself, with much to see and do. Of course, walking, hiking, climbing, and — in winter — skiing are excellent in and around Mürren. And, because of the rail and cablecar infrastructure of the Jungfrau Region, Mürren provides a fine base for exploring this world renowned World Heritage landscape.
Both transportation lines to and from Mürren operate at least half-hourly from about 6AM until almost 9PM (the BLM system) and from about 6AM until just before midnight. This means it is possible to depart Interlaken for Mürren as late as 11PM, making many long day-trips away from the Jungfrau Region to other parts of Switzerland possible, if not necessarily convenient.

Unless the poor weather convinces guests to leave the Jungfrau Region for a day of touring other parts of Switzerland, outdoor enthusiasts and

scenery lovers will find few reasons to

leave. Walkers of moderate fitness will find superb moderate hiking in the outstanding alpine scenery throughout the Jungfrau Region. And, adventuresome (and top-fit) visitors will find an equally large selection of challenging hikes and climbs available. Exploring the Jungfrau Region by public transport doesn't require athleticism. However, acrophobes may find that the many aerial gondolas and trails with open heights more daunting than enjoyable. Regardless of your activities, come day's end you will enjoy returning to your comfortable alpine home in the pretty village of Mürren. By dusk day visitors have left and Mürren is again whisper quiet, covered with a blanket of stars.
