Attractions in Nelson City
& the Nelson Region:

NEW ZEALAND'S MOST POPULAR NATIONAL PARK:
Abel Tasman National Park offers guided & catered sea kayaking and day and multi-day hiking.

A SUPERB WINE REGION with numerous wineries
offering tastings (and some with light meals) a short drive into the hills to the west of Nelson city. Wine Trail maps are available at the Nelson Tourist Information Office.

Swim and picnic at a hidden cove!

A RELAXED UNIVERSITY TOWN: the small city of

Nelson is youthful, with several fine restaurants, many lively cafés, and an active night life. The town is very walkable, with the town center just 5-minutes

walk from our Nelson lodgings.

SUNBATHING in New Zealand's sunniest weather on some of its best — and emptiest — beaches on Tasman Bay and Golden Bay.

THE MARLBOROUGH SOUNDS offers organized multi-day hiking, kayaking, and mountain biking along the long-distance Queen Charlotte Track, and day cruising with the Marlborough Sounds Mail Boat.

FRESH WATER FISHING: excellent stream fishing in Nelson Lakes National Park south of Nelson.

GOLF: no place in New Zealand is far from a golf course. The par-72 6,778-yard Nelson Golf Club links course is adjacent to Tasman Bay by the Nelson airport, and welcomes visitors.

UNACCOMPANIED HIKING: long-distance hiking on the Heaphy Track 4-6 days through the Kahurangi National Park to the Tasman Sea in Westland.

MORE ACTIVITIES: the Nelson Region offers sailing, scenic  flights, horse trekking, kiteboarding,

snorkeling, and deep sea fishing.

Lodgings: Top quality bed and breakfast inns in quiet locations within walking distance of downtown Nelson ideal for exploring the region. See a sample lodging.

Getting to/from Nelson:

Air New Zealand domestic shuttle flight boarding at Nelson. Flying between the North and South Islands is much faster and lots easier than taking the Wellington-Picton ferry. No rough seas or weather delays either, and costs no more. Photo © Home At First.

Most Home At First guests will arrive in Nelson by air from the North Island. (Flying between the North and South Islands is much faster and lots easier than taking the Wellington-Picton ferry: no rough seas or weather delays either, and costs about the same.) Nelson Airport is a 15-minute drive from our Nelson lodgings. Other arrivals by rental car, normally coming from Westland or from Christchurch, can expect

a 6-8 hour drive from these points.

 Getting around the Nelson region:

Use of a rental car is essential here. Outside of Nelson, even main roads can be narrow, winding, slow, and scenic, and, most often, not heavily trafficked.
