LOCATION:
WELLINGTON is New Zealand's
capital city, second only in population (just under 400,000) to
Auckland. Its location at the southwestern corner of the
NORTH ISLAND
puts it effectively in the middle of the country. Originally settled in
1840, Wellington replaced Auckland as New Zealand's capital in 1865. The
city is compact and densely populated owing to the restrictions of its
tight natural setting on steep-sided hills surrounding a nearly circular
harbor. The harbor entrance leads south into the Cook Strait, which
separates New Zealand's North Island from the South Island. Wellington
has a large, busy ferry terminal with interisland passenger services. It
also has a busy airport with many domestic and international flights.
Wellington is prosperous and youthful, with an active restaurant,
cultural, and social scene. Perhaps the social center of Wellington
extends along the beachfront of its eastern harbor, from the museums of
Lambton Quay past yacht basins, beaches, and restaurants of Oriental
Bay. |

HOSTING:
Janice, the co-owner/hostess at Oriental Bay Inn, is a native
Wellingtonian with Scottish roots. She takes great interest in the comfort
and welfare of her guests, and she prepares and serves breakfasts
beautifully. Outgoing and warm, she becomes an instant
friend within minutes of guest arrival. When she finds a free hour,
Janice, an avid outdoorswoman, may be found working on her tennis game
at her nearby club.

THE SETTING:
Oriental Bay Inn is set apart from the bustle of Wellington. Its location
on the promontory above the eastern end of Oriental Bay ensures a setting
with little traffic noise, grand views, and easy access to the city
center. A
three-minute walk accesses local shops and a
fine local café-restaurant at the neighborhood center. A five-minute
drive (or 30- |
|
minute walk)
reaches |
Wellington's vibrant city
center base near the Te Papa National Museum. Another five-minute drive
leads uphill to the scenic overlook atop Mt. Victoria, one of the
highest points above Wellington and its harbor, which offers hiking in
the hilly parkland. (For those not wanting to drive, frequent Wellington
public buses climb up Mt. Victoria and head down into central Wellington
along Oriental Parade from the corner bus stop by Oriental Bay Inn.) A 10-15-minute drive south leads to
Wellington's international airport which provides quick
access to domestic airports throughout New
Zealand's
NORTH ISLAND
and
SOUTH ISLAND. |
ACTIVITIES:
Wellington attractions include its noted Botanic Gardens, its lively
harbor beachfront with several fine museums, none more important than
New Zealand's national museum, Te Papa, and numerous fine shops,
restaurants, and services, as befitting a world-class capital city.
