STAVANGER

Stavanger was once the port city emigration point for many Norwegian-Americans. Today the city is an ideal touring base for Norway's southwest coast fjord region. Slightly larger than Bergen, Stavanger provides excellent genealogical resources for visitors researching their ancestry. Stavanger's great harbor is a major port serving the North Sea oil fields. Its very walkable, attractive waterfront region is home to excellent restaurants, shops, a quaint old town, and a traditional outdoor market.

Attractions in and around Stavanger:
Stavanger's Vågen harbor and Skagen district full of colorful shops and restaurants; the quaint residences of Gamle Stavanger old town; the 12th century cathedral and 9th century fire watchtower; the Norwegian Emigration Center; a reconstructed Iron Age habitation; numerous museums, especially the Canning (Sardine) Museum; numerous boat journeys to fjords and islands, especially inland to the famed Lysefjord with its terrifying open heights of Pulpit Rock and Kjerag.

Our Lodgings: Ideally located hotel in Stavanger at Skagen on the Vågen quayside.

Getting around Stavanger:
Central Stavanger is small enough to be very walkable, but hilly enough that some visitors will want to use its buses or use their rental cars. Visitors can tour parts of the region by rail, bus,

scenery, and explore small, out-of-the-way places.

Getting to/from the Stavanger Region
is possible by rental car from the
HARDANGER FJORD, from OSLO, and from SOUTHERN NORWAY. Norwegian Rail high-speed trains connect Stavanger with Oslo via Kristiansand. High-speed boats offer service between Stavanger and BERGEN daily in 4.5 hours. Stavanger Airport offers flights throughout SCANDINAVIA, to destinations in Europe, BRITAIN, and Iceland. International Ferry Services connect Stavanger with Hirtshals in northern DENMARK.

Gamle Stavanger — Stavanger's old town — is a lovely quarter of colorful wooden houses lining cobblestone streets. Its location, just across Vagen harbor inlet from the Skagen waterfront, means it is easily reached on foot from Home At First's Stavanger lodgings. Photo: Paul Smit - IMAGO.
