The West Coast — Bohuslän

A glittering archipelago of islands, dotted with charming coastal towns and villages; a seafood lover's paradise; Europe's greatest number of prehistoric rock carving sites, and numerous remnants of Sweden's own Viking history.

Attractions in Bohuslän:

Bohuslän province occupies the west coast of Sweden north from the city of GOTHENBURG to the border with NORWAY. Small coastal towns and villages like Smögen, Grebbestad, and Strömstad are sleepy fishing communities during much of the year, but swell with Scandinavian vacationers during summer months. Here are thousands of islands big and small, forming Sweden's second-largest archipelago after Stockholm's Baltic archipelago. Some of the islands — like Marstrandsön, Tjörn, Orund, Resö, Råssö, and Koster — are inhabited year round, but become populous from June through August. Some remain uninhabited but are visited occasionally by boaters exploring and fishing the maze of skerries that line the Bohuslän coast.
Many Swedes have simple vacation homes in rural Bohuslän where they retreat to a stress free lifestyle away from modern urban pressures. Many Norwegians sail south along the coast to

holiday in Bohuslän, where they find casual living at lower prices than at home in Norway. Bohuslän has a sizeable visitor infrastructure in place. Restaurants, lodgings, gas stations, and other services operate at full capacity during summer months, but shift to reduced hours or close entirely during most of the year.

More Attractions in Bohuslän: Bohuslän has a number of attractions that are not seasonal. It is a region rich in history and PREHISTORY, with countless sites from the Bronze Age, Iron Age, Viking Era, and Middle Ages. Among these, none is more important than the UNESCO World Heritage Site Tanum Rock Carvings, hundreds of intriguing images cut into the exposed coastal granite by Bronze Age man two to three thousand years ago. These may be best seen at Vitlycke between Tanumshede and the port of Grebbestad (in northern Bohuslän) in combination with a replica Bronze Age settlement. Relics of more recent history include noted fortress castles at Marstrand and Kungälv in southern Bohuslän. In the middle of Bohuslän is Sweden's only true fjord, Gullmaren Fjord, extending from the pretty coastal town of Lysekil inland 15 miles to the forests and farms of Munkedal.

The interface between its rich fishing industry and its agricultural interior makes Bohuslän attractive to visitors who enjoy fresh foods from the land and the sea. With so many visitors — especially in summer — a surprising number of high quality restaurants serve a delightful range of local delicacies, including Lysekil caviar, Norway lobsters (langoustines), and other fresh seafood. In Bohuslän it is possible to avoid boating and fishing and still enjoy the catch of the day.
