Lakeland

The picturesque heartland of Sweden is also home to important elements of the country's modern technological and design economy. Expect to find historic castles, spotless villages, and bustling small cities set along slow-paced, cross-country canals,  beside wild, rushing rivers, hugging the tranquil shores of hundreds of lakes, and hidden deep in the region's dense forests.

Attractions in Lakeland:

Lakeland is an unofficial region that crosses the borders of several of Sweden's historic provinces and modern counties stretching between STOCKHOLM & UPPSALA on the Baltic Coast and GOTHENBURG on the WEST COAST. Here are found Western Europe's largest lakes, Vänern and Vättern, as well as many hundreds of small lakes. Numerous small cities, compact towns, and prim villages populate the region, busy with industry, lumbering, and agriculture. There is substantial history (and prehistory) here, too. Standing rune stones, Iron Age grave sites, noteworthy and obscure castles, fortresses, and grand manors seem almost randomly strewn across the landscape. Endless tracts of forest and freshwater courses of all urgency dominate the scenery. Mountains are as rare as salt water in Lakeland.

Lakeland's forests have produced lumber, furniture, and modern Swedish design. The region's

water has produced hydroelectric power, recreation, and the Göta Canal that tied the nation together the way the Union Pacific railroad united the American states. Heavy industry came for power and transportation, and brought generations of Swedish employment at textile, paper, and furniture mills, and at iconic Swedish companies including Saab, Volvo, and IKEA.

More Attractions in Lakeland:

Visitors come to explore castles — like Läckö (on Lake Vänern), Gripsholm (Mariefred on Lake Mälaren), Örebro (in Örebro) — fish the lakes and streams, cycle and hike in the forests, rummage through open-air markets, cruise on the lakes and the Göta Canal. There are several worthwhile museums, including the Saab Motor Museum (Trollhättan), the Swedish Air Force Museum (Malmslätt near Linköping), the Museum of Work

(Noorköping), and the living 19th century town at the Old Linköping open-air museum. Fans of Swedish design can visit the Kingdom of Furniture at Lammhults on Lake Lammen. Perhaps most surprising but eminently logical are the several golf courses throughout the region that challenge guests to survive the trees and water that have challenged visitors to the region since pre-history.
