LOCATION: Fiordland is New Zealand’s best known, and, arguably, its most remarkable national park. A region of great lakes — Lake Te Anau, just 10 minutes walk from Te Anau Guesthouse, is the largest lake on the South Island — snowcapped peaks and deepwater fjords, Fiordland has been designated a World Heritage Site by UNESCO. Located on the southwestern corner of New Zealand’s South Island, Fiordland is blessed by a remote location that helps keep it pristine despite the ever-increasing pressures of tourism.

THE SETTING: Fiordland has few towns, and only one of any size, Te Anau, with a permanent population of fewer than 2,000. Te Anau is the closest primary staging area for most Fiordland activities, including treks on the Milford Track and day cruises on the Milford Sound. During the New Zealand summer months (late-December through late-March) the population of Te Anau more than doubles, as visitors pour into the town before and after experiencing the wonders of the region. Te Anau’s infrastructure of lodgings, shops, restaurants, and tour operators is ready to support more than 5,000 people each night. However, because the summer demand often far exceeds the capacity at Te Anau, advance reservations for accommodations, sightseeing, and walking are nearly always required. Fortunately for Home At First travelers to New Zealand, some of Te Anau’s best lodgings are available for their visits. Te Anau can change quickly from quiet and sleepy village to busy and noisy town. No matter. Home At First’s Te Anau

Guesthouse is located in a quiet residential neighborhood

across a 3-minutes walk from the shops, restaurants, services, and attractions of Te Anau's busy center.

ACTIVITIES: Visitors come to Fiordland from around the world primarily for two reasons: sightseeing and long-distance walking. Among the most popular tourist sites in New Zealand are the region’s fjords — mistakenly named "sounds" — Dusky Sound, Doubtful Sound, and, especially, Milford Sound, where a half-dozen large cruise boats and numerous helicopters and fixed wing aircraft are kept busy virtually every day of the year hauling hundreds of day and overnight passengers past such famous landmarks as Mitre Peak around the fjord out to its exit into the open Tasman Sea. The long-distance hiking routes of Fiordland include the challenging Kepler and Routeburn Tracks, the remote, water-level Hollyford, and, most famously, the Milford Track, the so-called "finest walk in the world", a four day

HOSTING: A delicious breakfast buffet is provided guests daily, featuring fresh fruits, local eggs, meats and cheeses, homemade bread, and hot-off-the-griddle pancakes. Rooms are service daily.
Te Anau town is the staging point for many of the popular activities available in the Fiordland region. The delightful hostess at Te Anau Guesthouse is pleased to help her guests arrange their Fiordland activities, and provides luggage storage and laundry facilities for those coming and going to the famous walking tracks.

          Organized excursions and activities

operators can pick-up and drop-off guests from the Te Anau Guesthouse front door.
