WESTERN DENMARK

Aarhus, Aalborg, & Jutland

The peninsula of Jutland is the northern finger of continental Europe, that part of Denmark attached to mainland Europe. Encircled in white sand, sustained by artists' communities and sunbathers from around the world, and home of some of the finest hotel-castles to be found anywhere, Jutland is also home to Denmark's second and fourth largest cities, Aarhus and Aalborg, university towns and culture centers of northwestern Denmark.

Attractions in Aarhus (Århus):

Denmark's second largest city is the country's principal port and the cultural capital of the Jutland peninsula. Perhaps Scandinavia's oldest city, Aarhus has been a major port city since Viking times. Aarhus has a rich heritage and a vital, commercially important present. Visit the 13th century cathedral and the nearby Viking Museum. Don't miss The Old Town open-air museum, a collection of urban buildings from the 16th to the 20th centuries assembled here from all over Denmark and staffed with presenters in costume. Served by a major rail station in the city center, Aarhus is easily visited by public transportation. Aarhus has a very walkable city center with several major streets now pedestrian zones. Getting around the

city has been made even easier by use of its free City Bikes and designated bike lanes along many streets.

Attractions in Aalborg (Ålborg):

Denmark's fourth largest city is the cultural center of northern Jutland. A university town with an industrial past, today's Aalborg is a youthful high-tech center employing home-grown talent. Set inland on the Limfjord — the body of water that separates North Jutland from the rest of the peninsula — Aalborg has been an important port since it was a Viking trading post a millennium ago. Aalborg's thousand years of history may be explored in several locations in and around the city. Visitors can reach Aalborg by car, intercity bus, or train. A network of buses serves the city. Aalborg's city center is very walkable.

Visitors traveling by car can easily explore North Jutland from Aalborg.

Other Attractions in Jutland:

Castles and half-timbered houses; charming fishing villages; Viking relics and museums; great expanses of white sand beaches; islands connected by ferry and causeway; moors, farms, and forests. Excellent bicycling is found throughout the region and especially in north Jutland.

Lodgings: Home At First lodgings include small inns near Aarhus and Danish castles converted to stylish, unique inns in north Jutland, not far from Aalborg and the beaches of both coasts.

Getting to/from the Jutland Region:
          Drive your Rental Car from
EASTERN DENMARK, CENTRAL DENMARK, or Germany; International Flights to/from Copenhagen and Aarhus airports then Danish Rail to Aarhus or Aalborg; International Ferries from NORWAY to Hirtshals in North Jutland, and from Norway and SWEDEN to
Frederikshavn in northeastern Jutland.

Getting around Jutland: Although Danish Railways provides service the length of Jutland, a rental car permits far greater flexibility and independence for touring the Danish countryside especially for those wanting to stop and enjoy the scenery, and explore small, out-of-the-way places. Like Copenhagen, Aarhus has a free CityBike program that makes

touring the cycling-friendly city center breezy fun. Car ferries large and small hop to and from many of the offshore islands.
Wherever you travel in Jutland you will find gracious people providing a warm welcome in an unspoiled environment of understated beauty, remarkable history, and delightful culture. Enjoy!
