— THE YORKSHIRE DALES —

BOLTON ABBEY ESTATE, WHARFEDALE

YORKSHIRE DALES NATIONAL PARK.

"The only voice which you can hear, Is the river murmuring near.

— When soft — the dusky trees between, And down the path through the open green,

Where is no living thing to be seen; And through yon gateway, where is found,

Beneath the arch with ivy bound, Free entrance to the churchyard ground--

Comes gliding in with lovely gleam, Comes gliding in serene and slow,

Soft and silent as a dream, A solitary Doe!"

— William Wordsworth, The White Deer of Rylstone, 1807-8

Welcome to North Yorkshire!

Here is land for all creatures, great and small. This part of northern England is a pleasant, rolling landscape dotted with small villages and larger market towns. And it is in such towns that our cozy cottages are located.
Agriculture is the way of life here. In recent years Yorkshire's two national parks and its variety of short and long-distance walking paths have brought the region new fame as a destination for those seeking beauty and tranquility in the unspoiled out-of-doors.

Real History in the Midst of Prime Geography

The many castles are curiosities standing as mute witnesses to a much less peaceful history when these valleys were rich prizes in ancient wars of conquest and independence, and pawns in the hands of kings and noble families.

Castles of all ages, sizes, styles, and conditions
are scattered across North Yorkshire, like
Bolton Abbey Castle in Wharfedale.

In our customers' own words—

"Yorkshire was as beautiful as I imagined. Remote moors, beautiful dales, tiny villages, and always wonderful, friendly people."

— J. & B. Herriges, California

Unreal Geography in the Mists of Prime History

The Yorkshire Dales are about the serendipity of wandering. Whether you wander by car, BY TRAIN, by bike, or on foot, exploring Yorkshire leads to the déjà vu discovery of places old and strange that seem at once new and familiar. Escape from the 21st century? Easily done here.

Reward yourself: get lost in North Yorkshire:
Big Sky and Sheep & Fells above Wensleydale.

Comfortable Cottages

HOME AT FIRST's cottages are found in villages with characteristic Yorkshire names like Bishop Monkton and Nidderdale. The names suggest accurately the quaint charm and slow pace of the region.

In our customers' own words —

"Bishop Monkton is one of the most charming villages I've seen in four trips to England. I want to move there and spend every afternoon at the Lamb & Flag pub nursing my pint and talking to the local citizens."

— G. D. Sutherland, New Hampshire

In our customers' own words —

"Our Yorkshire village of Bishop Monkton was charming. Everything comes to a halt when Mother Duck and her family walk down the middle of the road. These walks seemed rather frequent."

— F. Kirk, North Carolina

Apartments in a Small City, too

Harrogate Apartment Bedroom. Photo © Home At First.

For those looking to combine a town and country experience, HOME AT FIRST also offers apartments in the small, prosperous city of Harrogate, between the Dales and York. The apartments are within a short walk (5 minutes or less) of shops, restaurants, and the rail station, making rail trips to York and other British cities attractive and convenient.

At Last, Rich York, to Know You Well!
York, namesake city and regional capital of Yorkshire, contains a great medieval old city center, crowned by arguably the greatest of Gothic cathedrals in Europe, York Minster. The old city is very walkable, and full of attractive shops, restaurants, open-air markets, and museums. Best of all,
York is an easy day trip (about 60 minutes drive) from HOME AT FIRST's cottages on the southeastern edge of the Yorkshire Dales, or 45 minutes from our apartments in Harrogate.

of England's north.

Discover Yorkshire's Rural Heartland.

England's glory is also found among the
hills, dales and moors of North Yorkshire.

Explore pretty villages with names that leave you giggling. Visit a working farm. Discover Wensleydale Cheese (England's best?) by car or by train and vintage bus. Climb the ramparts of Richard III's castle ruins at Middleham. Nose through a castle still inhabited at Skipton. Ride and walk to Bolton Abbey using the Embsay and Bolton Abbey Steam Railway. Go to market at Knaresborough (every Wednesday since 1310). Walk the trails of Yorkshire Dales National Park. Stop for high tea in picturesque Grassington. Become a regular in the local pub. Find a new favorite restaurant daily.

— F. Kirk, North Carolina

Don't miss Ripon Cathedral (dating from the 7th century) or THE WORLD HERITAGE SITE OF STUDLEY ROYAL PARK & FOUNTAINS ABBEY. Encounter Britain's Viking past at the Jorvik center in York, and take at ghost walk through medieval York at night. Discover and enjoy local pubs and fine restaurants throughout the region.

Family-friendly England
Should we bring the kids along? Are you kidding?! There are great parks, steam train rides and boat rides better than in any amusement park, and, oh yes, amusement parks, too. Want history to come alive for your kids? Why not take them where so much history has been made? Worried about being away from McDonald's and TV? Don't be. Kids of all ages can get their burgers, fries and CNN all over Britain. And, who knows, maybe the kids will discover new tastes: fish 'n chips, ice lollies, and the fun of exploring thousands of years of English history from the Roman Emperor Constantine and the Jorvik Viking
