WRITTEN IN STONE

ITALY — at once ancient and modern

Italy's 2,500 year-old culture chronicles the history of the Western World.

Photo © Home At First

The story of Italy is the story of the emergence of the modern

Western World.

Why we go to Italy —

• To tour its sublime landscapes from volcanic to alpine, from serene seas to luxurious lakes.

• To explore the achievements & excesses of the Roman Empire.

• To encounter the enlightenment of Renaissance art, architecture, & philosophy.

• To visit the Vatican — powerful center of the Catholic Church.

• To shop for fashion & design that create global trends.

• To enjoy food and wine that influence cuisine worldwide.

Where we go in Italy — available for solo weeks or in any combination with each other or with other Home At First European destinations:

• Siena, Tuscany: Walled, hilltop, traffic-free, small, central-Tuscan city, Siena appears much as it was at the start of the Renaissance. Home At First's Siena apartments are on a 17th century estate just outside the city walls, a 25-minute walk to the hilltop Piazza del Campo, site of the colorful Palio horse races. Siena is within two hours drive time (or less) to Pisa, Lucca, Florence, Assisi, Perugia, and the beaches of Tuscany's Tyrrhenian seacoast.

• Rural Tuscany: Our apartments are located in hilly southern Tuscany midway between the city of Siena and the Tyrrhenian coast. Nearby are medieval hill towns, including several notable for their red wine. Our rural Tuscany estate apartments are ideal touring bases within 45-150 minutes drive time of Pisa, Assisi, Florence, Chianti, Montepulciano, Siena, Montalcino, and the sunny beaches of Grosseto on the Tyrrhenian Sea.

• Rome: Home At First's Rome apartments are superbly located in the heart of historic Rome on the east bank of the River Tiber. From here it's 10-15 minutes easy walking distance west to St. Peter's Square at the Vatican and east to the ancient Roman Pantheon. Many of Rome's top sights are walkable. Our apartments are close to legions of restaurants and cafés lining the historic district's largely traffic-free streets, alleys, and plazas.

• Special Request Destinations — Available by special request only and custom-priced to fit your precise needs:

• AMALFI: on the rugged, stunning Amalfi coast south of Naples, west of Salerno. Walk to the beach. Explore the cliffside towns with sumptuous restaurants and marvelous sea views. Day-trips to the Roman villages Pompeii and Herculaneum preserved by volcanic eruption in 79AD.

• FLORENCE: Italy's great Renaissance city, Florence remains associated with great artists: Michelangelo, Da Vinci, and Botticelli, and with the powerful Medici family and Machiavelli. Visitors come for the museums, the architecture, and the atmosphere of the World Heritage Site city center.

• SICILY: The largest Mediterranean island, Sicily lies southwest of the toe of Italy's boot-shaped peninsula. Blessed with outstanding foods, impressive geography (including volcano Mt. Etna), some of Italy's finest beaches, and many classical Greek ruins, Sicily is nearly a country of its own.

• VENICE: Northeastern Italy's romantic, dreamscape city is built on 100+ small islands on a lagoon of the Adriatic. Venice is known for its canals and gondoliers, its Renaissance architecture, St. Mark's Square & Basilica, the Doge's Palace, the Rialto Bridge, its food, its art, and its Murano glasswork.

• Round-trip Flights: Our airline experts plan your round-trip flights to Italy (usually to Rome, but to Milan, Florence or Venice if one of these is a better choice for your needs) from your home airport. Our PRICE CHART includes round-trip fares based on flights from New York (JFK) or Newark (EWR) to Rome (FCO). Flights from/to all other airports available for applicable fare supplements or reductions.

• APARTMENT HOSTING: A friendly English-speaking host or hostess meets you when you arrive at your Italian lodgings, and is available during your stay for questions, suggestions, problems, or emergencies.

• Lodgings: Choose from 3 SUPERB LOCATIONS:

• SIENA: Apartments on a gated Tuscan estate just outside the Siena city walls. Walkable into Siena. Pool & furnished garden. Extensive views of Siena. Our Siena apartments are within 15-20 minutes walk or 5 minutes or less drive from shops, stores, restaurants, cafés, and services. Driving and parking can be challenging on the winding maze of streets surrounding medieval Siena, and cars are not permitted inside the old, walled city. We may recommend using taxis to get around urban Siena for guests who are not good walkers. Minimal rental

ROME

THE ETERNAL CITY

In Rome the spectacular is commonplace. The Baroque church and fountains of the Piazza Navona are rarely mentioned in guidebooks, but would be major attractions in many other cities.

• ROME: Apartments in the historic old city. Walkable to the Vatican and many Roman monuments. Our Rome lodgings are within short walking distance of a wide variety of shops, restaurants, cafés, activities, and other services. Use of taxis or public transportation rather than car rental is strongly recommended in Rome. As part of their full package, guests staying in Rome more than 3 nights receive a Rome transpass valid on the metro, buses, streetcars, & certain trains for the number of days they will be staying at our Rome lodgings. Minimum lodging in Rome: 3 nights.

• ADDING TIME &/or multiple ITALIAN destinations: You can add extra days or weeks at your initial Italian apartment or at additional lodging locations across Italy. See the

appropriate PRICE CHART to determine the cost of

additional time at any of our lodging locations in

Rome, Siena, and rural Tuscany.

• OTHER ITALY LOCATIONS, TOO: We have apartment resources available in other parts of Italy, too. Ask us for a custom price for weeks at our Amalfi Coast, Florence, Sicily, & Venice locations. WHAT CAN WE CUSTOM-DESIGN FOR YOU?

• CAR RENTAL: Guests to rural Tuscany need rental cars. Guests to Siena may find rental cars very useful if they hope to tour the region, but find them of limited usefulness in Siena itself. Siena guests do have the option of arriving and departing by train and not having a rental car. Regardless of your destination in Italy, if having use of a rental car is appropriate for you, we are car rental experts who can arrange the best solutions for needs.

• ON-SITE DESTINATION Guide keyed to your regional destination in Italy to help make the most out of your visit. Includes suggestions for touring, walking, restaurants, shopping, museums, much more.

• COMBINING COUNTRIES: Before or after your visit to Italy, you may choose to visit
• DENMARK • ENGLAND (LONDON too) • FRANCE (PARIS too)
•
GERMANY • ICELAND • IRELAND • SWITZERLAND

NORWAY • SCOTLAND • SWEDEN • WALES

We will arrange for lodgings, flights, and ground transportation to combine your destinations on the most efficient itinerary for the best price possible.

AMALFI

THE BEST OF

coastal italy

The remarkably preserved coastal town of
Amalfi, south of Naples, was once a powerful
independent trading state, like Venice, but no
more. Now, like Venice, Amalfi is a romantic
time machine, available by special request
